Deanna wants to keep her talent as a ventriloquist secret, because she's already insecure about her status at school and what others might think of her. She'd like to make new friends (and hold onto the one good friend she does have) and catch the eye of Jason too. But what will they think if they know she "plays" with a "doll," her dummy, also known as Ramblin' Rob. Deanna's mother has left the family and Deanna finds it difficult at times to talk to her father.

Despite her doubts and fears about being found out, Deanna does agree to bring her dummy to the hospital where she volunteers and to entertain the kids there with her ventriloquism act.

The ventriloquism is a fresh idea for a story and one that was fun to learn about. Deanna is a great character, full of doubts and fears, but eager to help the kids at the hospital and find her own way through the world of high school.

Dummy and Me is a short and very sweet book sure to please not only tweens, but anyone who likes a tender story with a touch of innocent romance.
